Breathing Exercises for Calm & Focus
These self-guided exercises offer a few gentle ways to bring attention back to breathing. Keep the pace comfortable, do not force a hold or deeper breath, and treat any count as optional rather than a target to achieve.
Box breathing
Try an easy, even rhythm of inhale, a short pause, exhale, and another short pause. If holding the breath feels uncomfortable, leave out the pauses and use a relaxed, steady inhale and exhale instead.
Relaxed 4-7-8 practice
This counted pattern uses a longer, unforced exhale. Begin with an easy count that feels natural. There is no benefit in straining to match a number, and returning to ordinary breathing is always a valid choice.
Equal breathing
Match a comfortable inhale with a comfortable exhale for a few quiet minutes. This simple pattern can provide an attention anchor before meditation, during a transition, or as part of a personal wind-down routine.
Safety and pacing
Stop and return to normal breathing if you feel dizzy, panicky, numb, short of breath, or unwell. These exercises are general educational guidance, not medical advice or a substitute for care from a qualified professional. If you have a health concern or are unsure whether a breathing practice is suitable, seek individual advice first.
