The 5-4-3-2-1 exercise is a flexible sensory attention practice: notice five things you see, four things you feel, three things you hear, two things you smell, and one thing you taste or appreciate. Adapt the sequence when a sense is unavailable or a particular prompt feels uncomfortable.

Grounding is a modest attention exercise, not a cure for anxiety or trauma. Keep the practice brief, return attention to the room, and stop if it increases distress. Persistent or severe symptoms deserve qualified care; immediate danger requires emergency support.
